After Care Instructions Following Extractions
Tooth extractions and other surgical procedures are similar to other types of surgery. Your own care by following the doctor’s instructions will speed recovery.
Read and follow these directions carefully:
A certain amount of bleeding, soreness and swelling is normal. Reduce your activity as much as possible for several hours. Avoid excessive eating, drinking, and unnecessary talking. Do not rinse your mouth or brush your teeth today. These activities may hinder the formation of a blood clot, which is necessary for proper healing.
Healing
Do not allow your child to disturb the wound by touching it with fingers, toothpick, etc …. Bleeding and infection may result. Do not allow child to drink with a straw for 24 hours.
Bleeding
Some bleeding is expected following the procedure. If it becomes excessive, place a rolled sterile gauze pad over the wound and keep in place for 30 minutes. If excessive bleeding persists, please call our office.
Diet
___ Liquids allowed unless prescribed otherwise by Dr. Kasselian.
___ No food allowed for 4 hours after the procedure.
This allows the blood clot to form. After that your child should follow a soft diet for 24 hours.
Avoid giving hot harsh or raw foods until the wound has healed.
Mouth Rinsing and Brushing
Avoid brushing for 24 hours after leaving the office. To help cleanse the mouth, your child can rinse their mouth using 1/2 teaspoon of salt dissolved in a glass of lukewarm water.
Pain
If a prescription painkiller is given, use it according to directions. If pain persists to call our office.
Swelling
To alleviate and to help prevent swelling, you can apply an ice pack over the affected area for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off. Be sure to place a cloth between the skin and the ice pack.
